'A strong democracy requires a strong opposition'
After three hour marathon meeting, the Congress Working Committee rejected party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi's resignation, who had earlier offered to quit from party posts taking moral responsibility for the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
Rejecting their resignations, the committe said, If we are to fight RSS-backed BJP govt, we need Sonia and Rahul Gandhi at the helm all the more.
We were not able to carry conviction with people as communication was poor, said CWC members.
The committee also decided to move on and work for the upcoming five Assembly elections. "We must ensure that we dont get demorailsed," members felt.
A strong democracy requires a strong opposition, the CWC said, hinting that it would sit as the principal opposition party.
